Inter 3-3 Benfica (Agg 5-3): Inter book Milan derby in UCL semis despite draw

Image
Inter Milan secured a historic Champions League semi-final with arch-rivals AC Milan despite being held by Benfica at an ecstatic San Siro. 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League 3 (5)  -  3 (3) Barella (14') Lautaro (65') Correa (78') Aursnes (38') António Silva (86') Petar Musa (90'+5') Leading 2-0 from the first leg in Lisbon, Inter increased their aggregate lead following Nicolo Barella's sumptuous finish before a bullet header by Fredrik Aursnes gave Benfica hope. Argentina World Cup winner Lautaro Martinez and substitute Joaquin Correa made it 5-1 on aggregate before Benfica scored two late goals through Antonio Silva and Petar Musa. Inter have lost four of their past five games in Serie A to drop out of the Champions League places, but Simone Inzaghi's side can now look forward to two mouth-watering matches against AC Milan - who knocked out Napoli on Tuesday - for a place in the final. The hosts looked to be cruising when Italy midfielder Barella ma...

Bayern 1-1 Man City (Agg 1-4): City to face Madrid in UCL semis, Haaland scores

Image
Manchester City set up a Champions League semi-final clash with holders Real Madrid as Erling Haaland's goal ended Bayern Munich's hopes of a comeback. 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League 1 (1)  -  1 (4) Kimmich (83' PEN) Haaland (37' Penalty Missed) Haaland (57') Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel felt his side needed a miracle to go through after losing the first leg 3-0 - and they squandered plenty of opportunities to get back into the game. Haaland made them pay as he lashed home a shot into the top corner to cap off a swift counter-attack, 15 seconds after Ederson had saved Kingsley Coman's shot at the other end. That was the Norwegian's 48th goal for City this season, but he could have reached that figure earlier in the game but blazed over a penalty after a Dayot Upamecano handball. Just like in the first leg last week, Upamecano - who was also beaten easily for the 57th-minute goal - had a nightmare. The French centre-back was shown a red card early in the game f...

Juventus 1-0 Sporting CP: Gatti goal gives Juve edge in hard fought victory

Image
Juventus will take a slender advantage to Portugal after edging past Sporting Club de Portugal 1-0 in the Europa League quarter final on Thursday night.  2022/2023 UEFA Europa League 1  -  0 Federico Gatti (73') In a close-fought encounter, which saw the visitors enjoy more possession, more chances and more shots, the first leg was decided with a goal from an unlikely source. After Sebastian Coates' poor clearance, Juve defender Federico Gatti crashed the ball in with 20 minutes left. Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla: Maguire & Malacia OWN GOALS cancel out Sabitzer brace

Image
Manchester United conceded two own goals and lost Lisandro Martinez to a serious-looking injury in the final six minutes against Sevilla to put their Europa League hopes in jeopardy. 2022/2023 UEFA Europa League 2  -  2 Sabitzer (14') Sabitzer (21') Malacia (84' OG) Maguire (90'+2' OG) United looked to be coasting to a quarter-final first-leg victory at Old Trafford thanks to Marcel Sabitzer's first-half double. However, after Antony had hit the crossbar, Sevilla came back into the contest and profited from a terrible ending to the game for Erik ten Hag's men. First Tyrell Malacia diverted the ball past David de Gea after former Manchester City man Jesus Navas had pulled a low cross back from the goalline. Then, two minutes into injurytime, Youssef En-Nesryi's off-target header struck Harry Maguire to leave De Gea helpless as it flew into the net. The scoreline is bad enough as it leaves United facing a battle to secure the semi-final spot they seemed to...

Image
Girona manager Míchel has discussed his side’s 0-0 draw with Barcelona at Camp Nou. In an interview that appeared on  Marca , the head coach expressed his pride in his players. “When we had the ball we knew how to progress and we managed to fashion three goalscoring opportunities. The team showed personality, and in the periods where we struggled, we still managed to defend well and close the spaces in the box.” The Girona defence managed to limit Barça to only three shots on target, all of which were swept up by former Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. “I was very happy with the clean sheet because we didn’t come [to Camp Nou] looking to park the bus. Gazzaniga performed well.” Míchel also revealed that he didn’t expect to pick up a 0-0 draw against the current league leaders. “I told my players it would be impossible to draw 0-0. We hadn’t managed it at any away game so far this season. I’ll have to buy the lads a drink!” Despite having dropped two points, Barcelona still ext...

'You cannot please everyone' - Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea hits back at critics

Image
David de Gea has responded to the criticism he faces as Man United's first-choice goalkeeper. David de Gea has dismissed his critics and promised to continue doing his best to keep clean sheets for Manchester United. After roaring back to his best form last season while facing pressure from Dean Henderson for his spot, De Gea has continued to play at a high level for Erik ten Hag and enjoyed yet another excellent campaign. Many wondered in pre-season if the Spaniard would suit his new manager's style of play as he struggles with the ball at his feet. While there have been nervy moments with his distribution, De Gea has proved them wrong by firmly establishing himself as Ten Hag's unquestionable No.1. The 32-year-old helped United end their trophy drought in February by keeping a clean sheet in the Carabao Cup final, which saw him surpass legend Peter Schmeichel as the club's all-time leading clean sheet holder. When asked about the milestone, De Gea admitted he will alw...

Luke Shaw ruled out of first-leg against Sevilla

Image
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed Luke Shaw will miss the first leg against Sevilla in the Europa League. The club confirmed that Marcus Rashford would miss the game in a statement that was released before Erik ten Hag spoke to the press. As a result, Rashford will miss ‘a few games’, but Ten Hag refused to add whether the forward would return in time for the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton. Ten Hag also confirmed that Shaw and Alejandro Garancho will miss the game. “No, both not available,”  Ten Hag said, as per Manchester Evening News. Meanwhile, Ten Hag suggested that he expects Shaw to return soon. “Luke Shaw I expect him back at short notice,”  he added. We fully expect Tyrell Malacia to start at left-back instead of Shaw tomorrow night. The Dutch full-back has played 32 games for United so far this season. On another note, Ten Hag won’t want his team to underestimate their opponents in the Europa League, despite their poor form domestically this ter...

Enzo Fernandez explains story Frank Lampard told Chelsea squad that could inspire unlikely win in Champions League

Image
Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez has revealed how Frank Lampard’s story has inspired the squad ahead of their Real Madrid tie. The Blues face a tough task on Wednesday night when they take on the European champions at the Bernabeu. Chelsea face Real Madrid on Wednesday night After Frank Lampard was appointed on Thursday as interim coach until the end of the season, all eyes are on the Champions League. It remains the only competition that Chelsea can win but they face their sternest test against Real Madrid while their Premier League form, with two wins in 11, will not give them confidence. However, Fernandez has opened up over how Lampard has inspired the squad after speaking about his own experience as a player in a similar situation. In 2012, Andres Villas-Boas was sacked after a 3-1 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League and Roberto Di Matteo managed to steer them to victory in the most unlikely scenarios. “He told us the story of when he won the Champions League in 2012,” Fernandez s...

Everything Ten Hag has done to transform Manchester United after Solskjaer and Rangnick misery

Image
Erik ten Hag will take charge of his 50th Man Utd match when they host Sevilla in the Europa League tomorrow night. It is going to be a special occasion for Erik ten Hag when he makes his way out of the Old Trafford tunnel tomorrow night. The Manchester United manager will take charge of his 50th competitive match for the club when they face Sevilla in the Europa League, and it will be an opportunity to reflect on just how far they have come. A year ago today, United had just lost away at Everton and were seventh in the Premier League. They were out of the FA Cup, hadn't won the League Cup and had also been knocked out of the Champions League. The final few matches of the season were all but a formality as United looked to end their worst top-flight campaign of the modern era and turn over yet another new leaf. Twelve months later, it is truly remarkable just how much has changed. United have already won more league matches than they did last season, with another nine matches left ...

Xavi says possible Messi return brings "a great deal of excitement"

Image
Barcelona's Monday night fixture against local rivals Girona in the 'derbi barcelonés' ended in a disappointing draw. With a win, Barca had the chance to go 15 points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the table, but instead extended their lead to 13 points after picking up a point. With ten games to play in the final stages of the season, there are 30 points up for grabs and unless the Catalan giants experience a historic slip up, the title is virtually all but decided. Xavi also addressed rumors regarding what would be sensation return to the Camp Nou for Lionel Messi. Fans of the club have in recent games made their feelings known, having chanted the Argentinian's name in the 10th minute of the previous two home fixtures. "About Leo, I think it generates great enthusiasm - the fans have chanted his name a couple of times now and the fact that he could come back to the club generates a great deal of excitement, but we will see how that goes and we just need to fo...
