Gary Neville identifies Manchester United 'problem' as player set for training ground return
Here are your Manchester United morning headlines on Friday, December 23.
Gary Neville has told Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag that his side has "got a big problem" at centre-back, after Casemiro played alongside Victor Lindelof in a make-shift defence during their 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Burnley.
With both Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez taking part in the World Cup final on Sunday, the clash with the Clarets came too soon for the pair. Harry Maguire's illness prompted Ten Hag to deploy Casemiro alongisde Lindelof in the centre of United's defence.
The Brazilian helped his team keep a clean sheet against Vincent Kompany's side, but former United defender Neville had some serious concerns about the Reds going into their Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest.
He told Sky Sports: "They look like they’ve got a big problem at centre back. MartÃnez looks like he’s going to be at least a couple of weeks, Varane obviously he was injured and you don’t know when he’s going to come back, and if Harry Maguire’s ill they’re going to go potentially with a really weakened defence into those Premier League games.
Amad will return to Manchester United's training ground next week when Championship side Sunderland use the facility over the festive fixture period.
The 20-year-old joined the Black Cats on loan in the summer window and has been in fine form for the club in recent weeks, netting five goals in his last seven appearances. Amad's form has been so impressive that United have even contemplated recalling him ahead of the January window after including an option in his season-long loan agreement.
It seems unlikely that the Ivorian will be brought back to United for the second half of the campaign, but he will have the chance to catch up with his parent club when he returns to Carrington next week.
Sunderland face Blackburn at home on Boxing Day before back-to-back games in Lancashire as they visit Wigan next Thursday, followed by a trip to Blackpool on New Year's Day. Rather than rushing back and forth between games, the Championship will base itself in the North West and has been granted permission by Manchester United to use their training facility.
