Pele will spend Christmas in the hospital with his family
Pele, the world soccer star will remain hospitalized at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Sao Paulo, to receive the New Year because his clinical condition has worsened and he no longer reacts to treatment, so he is only receiving palliative care to help him mitigate the pain and breathe better.
The medical report of 'O Rei', mentions he does not have an optimistic prognosis about the health of the considered best soccer player of all times:
"Edson Arantes do Nascimento presents progression of the oncological disease and requires further care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions. The patient remains hospitalized in a common room, under the necessary care of the medical team," says the medical report on Pele's health.
Pele, who is 82 years old, has been hospitalized since November 29. At that time he arrived at the hospital on a routine follow-up visit to the chemotherapy he underwent the previous year and was diagnosed with a respiratory infection. Weeks earlier he had had a case of Covid-19 and, although he reacted favorably to the respiratory infection, he no longer responds to chemotherapy and is only being given palliative care, to alleviate pain and shortness of breath.
Messages from Pele's family
According to Infobae, Pele is in critical health condition, he practically does not speak due to fatigue and a lung problem, while the only kidney that was working began to fail, but he was watching the actions of the World Cup in Qatar, until Argentina's victory. His heart still responds, although the rest of his ailments could fail in the short term, while doctors try to prevent his health from deteriorating further.
One of his daughters, Kely Nascimento, confirmed on social networks that the family will spend Christmas in the hospital. "We'd better stick around," although she joked that they will turn the room where her father is in into a "sambadrome" and would even serve caipirinhas.
"We, as always, are grateful for all the affection you transmit to us here in Brazil and all over the world. Your love for him, your stories and your prayers comfort us enormously, because we know we are not alone," Pele's daughter said.
Until Thursday, the most recent medical report on Pele's health was published last December 12. On that day, doctors reported that Pele was in better health, in a normal room, conscious and with stable vital signs.
The worsening of Pelé's health
In recent years, Pele had to go to the operating room three times. First for a hip prosthesis and two others to correct it. In addition, he suffers from chronic pain in his knees, so in recent months he has had to walk with the support of a walker or a wheelchair.
In addition to these discomforts to move independently, his health began to decline in August 2021, when he underwent a routine check-up, which he should have undergone in 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic. As a result, doctors discovered a tumor in his colon.
Since then, he has continuously visited the hospital and the current hospitalization raised the alarm in the world of world soccer, in the middle of Qatar 2022. As a result, FIFA itself and several of the best players of all time sent him messages wishing him a speedy recovery. Santos fans even held a vigil outside the hospital.
The Brazilian national team dedicated the victory against South Korea to him, and huge banners wishing him a speedy recovery appeared in the stands, as well as in some of the emblematic buildings of Doha, the World Cup capital.
